9 de noviembre de 1989: el régimen de la RDA permite el paso libre por el Muro de Berlín. La reunificación alemana formal se completa el 3 de octubre de 1990. Para Glashütte — el pueblo sajón a 30 km al sur de Dresde, capital relojera histórica de la Alemania del Este — el evento es transformador.
Durante 45 años bajo la RDA (1945-1990), todas las manufacturas relojeras históricas de Glashütte habían sido nacionalizadas en una sola empresa estatal: VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB), formada en 1951. November 9, 1989: the GDR regime allows free passage through the Berlin Wall. Formal German reunification is completed on October 3, 1990. For Glashütte — the Saxon town 30 km south of Dresden, historic watchmaking capital of East Germany — the event is transformative.
During 45 years under the GDR (1945-1990), all historic Glashütte watchmaking manufactures had been nationalized into a single state company: VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB), formed in 1951. Brands like A. Lange & Söhne (founded 1845), Tutima (1927), Mühle (1869) and the German industrial watchmaking history itself were frozen in a low-quality socialist operation.
Roland Schwertner — a Düsseldorf photographer, a western city with no prior link to Saxony — travels to Glashütte in December 1989, barely a month after the Wall's opening. What he sees: an intact technical tradition (the GUB had kept production), master watchmakers with inherited knowledge, and the opportunity to found a new brand without the baggage of the historic ones (Lange still had not officially reopened).
In January 1990, NOMOS opens its first operation in Glashütte. It is the first new watchmaking manufacture founded in Glashütte after reunification — years before A. Lange (1994), Tutima (revival), Mühle (revival).

Without reunification, NOMOS would not exist. It is the only modern watch brand whose origin is directly linked to a major geopolitical event — more than a marketing claim, it is the literal structure of its founding narrative. Roland Schwertner did not invent a new technology nor inherit a tradition — he saw a specific cultural opportunity from an irrepeatable historical moment.

En 1992, NOMOS lanza su primera colección comercial. Cuatro modelos manuales con calibre Peseux 7001 modificado en Glashütte: Tangente, Orion, Ludwig, Tetra. Todos diseñados por Susanne Günther.
La decisión de Schwertner de contratar a una diseñadora gráfica sin background relojero es probablemente la decisión editorial más importante de la marca. Günther aplicó principios Bauhaus (escuela alemana 1919-1933 que fundió arte, artesanía y tecnología en estética minimalista funcional) a relojes:
- Tipografía sans-serif geométrica en los números arábigos (excepto Ludwig que usa romanos como cita histórica)

La estética 1992 se mantiene 34 años después con cambios mínimos. Es uno de los lenguajes de diseño relojero más estables del siglo XX y XXI.
In 1992, NOMOS launches its first commercial collection. Four manual models with Peseux 7001 calibre modified in Glashütte: Tangente, Orion, Ludwig, Tetra. All designed by Susanne Günther.
Schwertner's decision to hire a graphic designer with no watchmaking background is probably the brand's most important editorial decision. Günther applied Bauhaus principles (German school 1919-1933 that fused art, craft and technology in functional minimalist aesthetics) to watches:
- Geometric sans-serif typography on the Arabic numerals (except Ludwig which uses Roman as historical citation)
- Fine, elongated, lanceolated hands without ornamentation
- Flat dials without decorative textures — visual white paper
- Long thin lugs that give a sense of elegance without ostentation
- Simple round cases (except Tetra which is square)
The 1992 aesthetic is maintained 34 years later with minimal changes. It is one of the most stable watchmaking design languages of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Durante los primeros 22 años (1990-2014), NOMOS dependía técnicamente de Nivarox-FAR (Swatch Group) para las espirales de sus calibres. Era una vulnerabilidad estratégica: si Swatch decidía cortar suministros a competidores (algo que el grupo anunció gradualmente desde 2003), NOMOS quedaba sin escapes.
En 2014, después de ocho años de desarrollo y ~€13 millones de inversión, NOMOS presenta el Swing System: el primer escape (assortiment) completamente producido in-house por una marca alemana mid-range. Consta de:
- Volante de aleación propia, regulado in-house
- Espiral azulada templada producida en Glashütte (no comprada a Nivarox)
- Rueda de escape de geometría propia
- Áncora proprietaria
- Doble rodillo ajustado en Glashütte
El Swing System hace de NOMOS técnicamente independiente de Swatch Group. Es la diferencia entre "marca alemana con base ETA" y "manufactura alemana completa". A partir de este punto, cada nuevo calibre NOMOS (DUW 3001, 4001, 6101, 5001, 1001) lleva el Swing System.
During the first 22 years (1990-2014), NOMOS technically depended on Nivarox-FAR (Swatch Group) for the hairsprings of its calibres. It was a strategic vulnerability: if Swatch decided to cut supplies to competitors (something the group announced gradually since 2003), NOMOS was left without escapements.
In 2014, after eight years of development and ~€13 million investment, NOMOS presents the Swing System: the first escapement (assortiment) fully produced in-house by a German mid-range brand. It consists of:
- Balance wheel of own alloy, regulated in-house
- Blued tempered hairspring produced in Glashütte (not purchased from Nivarox)
- Escape wheel of own geometry
- Proprietary pallet fork
- Double roller adjusted in Glashütte
The Swing System makes NOMOS technically independent of Swatch Group. It is the difference between "German brand with ETA base" and "complete German manufacture". From this point, every new NOMOS calibre (DUW 3001, 4001, 6101, 5001, 1001) carries the Swing System.

En 2015, NOMOS presenta el Calibre DUW 3001, motor automático con solo 3,2 mm de altura. Es entre los movimientos automáticos más delgados producidos en serie del mundo, comparable únicamente con calibres ultraprecio extremo (Piaget 1200, Bvlgari Octo Finissimo).
Lo logrado técnicamente:
- Eficiencia mecánica del 94,2% — fricción interna reducida al 5,8% (medido independientemente)
- Sistema de cuerda neomatik propio con geometría optimizada
- Posibilidad de cajas más finas — habilita el Tangente neomatik 41 mm de solo 7,9 mm de altura total
El DUW 3001 cambia la propuesta NOMOS: pasa de "Bauhaus dress watch accesible" a "Bauhaus dress watch con calibre técnicamente líder mundial en delgadez".
In 2015, NOMOS presents the Calibre DUW 3001, automatic engine with only 3.2 mm height. It is among the thinnest automatic movements produced in series in the world, comparable only to extreme ultra-price calibres (Piaget 1200, Bvlgari Octo Finissimo).
What is technically achieved:
- 94.2% mechanical efficiency — internal friction reduced to 5.8% (independently measured)
- Proprietary neomatik winding system with optimized geometry
- Possibility of thinner cases — enables the Tangente neomatik 41 mm of only 7.9 mm total height
The DUW 3001 changes the NOMOS proposition: it goes from "accessible Bauhaus dress watch" to "Bauhaus dress watch with a calibre that is the world technical leader in thinness".

En 2018, NOMOS presenta el DUW 6101 con una innovación de complicación rara: la fecha Update. En lugar de la ventanilla de fecha tradicional (que rompe la simetría del dial Bauhaus), el DUW 6101 usa una aguja roja delgada que apunta a una escala anular de fechas (1-31) en el borde del dial.
Beneficios:

In 2018, NOMOS presents the DUW 6101 with a rare complication innovation: the Update date. Instead of the traditional date window (which breaks the symmetry of the Bauhaus dial), the DUW 6101 uses a thin red hand that points to a ring date scale (1-31) at the edge of the dial.
Benefits:
- Maintains central dial purity without windows or sub-dials breaking the geometry
- Allows fast adjustment via own patented system
- Design coherent with original Bauhaus aesthetics — the complication "hides" on the perimeter
It is one of the few complication innovations with real Bauhaus design of the 21st century. Today it appears in the entire "Update" line: Tangente Update, Orion Update, Metro Update, Ludwig Update.
