IWC nació de una tesis técnica heterodoxa. En 1868, casi todos los relojes suizos se fabricaban a mano por talleres del Jura — Le Locle, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Saint-Imier. La calidad era altísima pero la producción industrial en escala (el modelo americano de Waltham, Elgin, E. Howard) no había llegado a Suiza.

El sello "Probus Scafusia"

Desde 1903, IWC marca sus relojes con el sello Probus Scafusia — latín para "probo (honesto, genuino) de Schaffhausen". Es la firma de garantía de calidad. Aparece en el caseback de prácticamente todos los relojes IWC modernos.

IWC was born from a heterodox technical thesis. In 1868, almost every Swiss watch was built by hand in Jura ateliers — Le Locle, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Saint-Imier. Quality was extremely high, but industrial production at scale (the American model of Waltham, Elgin, E. Howard) had not yet reached Switzerland.

Florentine Jones inverted the equation. He arrived in Switzerland from Boston convinced that Swiss craftsmanship and American industrial machinery could be combined to produce extremely high-quality watches at scale. He chose Schaffhausen for three reasons:

The Rhine: the only major watchmaking city with a powerful river that enabled industrial hydroelectric power
Outside the Jura: far from the traditional watchmaking cluster, he could build without direct competition
Communications: on Switzerland's northern border close to Germany, it simplified export to both European and American markets

The "Probus Scafusia" seal

Since 1903, IWC has marked its watches with the seal Probus Scafusia — Latin for "honest/genuine, from Schaffhausen". It is the house's quality warranty signature. It appears on the caseback of virtually every modern IWC watch.

Florentine Ariosto Jones tiene 27 años cuando funda IWC. Viene de E. Florentine Ariosto Jones is 27 when he founds IWC. He comes from E. Howard Watch & Clock Co. in Boston — the most advanced American manufacture of its time, a pioneer of industrial production at scale. His thesis: combine the watchmaking quality of the Swiss Jura with the American method of machinery, division of labour and interchangeable parts.

He buys land in Schaffhausen on the Rhine. He imports machinery from the United States. He builds the first fully electric/hydraulic watch factory in Switzerland. His target market: high-quality pocket watches exported back to the United States.

The problem: the tariff war of the 1870s and the financial crisis of 1873 make the export model unworkable. Jones struggles for a decade with financial issues. In 1879 he sells the company and returns to the US. He dies in 1916 in Boston, practically forgotten by the industry he helped found.

Johannes Rauschenbach-Schenk, a Schaffhausen industrialist, buys IWC in 1880 for a token price. He stabilizes the company financially and runs it until his death in 1881. His son Johannes Rauschenbach-Wirth takes over.

A remarkable historical aside: a daughter of the Rauschenbach family marries Carl Gustav Jung, father of analytical psychology. Jung was briefly an IWC shareholder by marriage.

In 1929 Ernst Jakob Homberger, Rauschenbach's son-in-law, takes the helm. The Homberger era spans World War II — IWC produces both the Beobachtungsuhren (B-Uhr) for the German Luftwaffe AND the Mark X / Mark XI for the British Royal Air Force. The factory survives the accidental American bombing of Schaffhausen in 1944.

In 1955 the Ingenieur launches, the first antimagnetic wristwatch with an integrated Faraday cage. This is the moment IWC consolidates its engineering identity.

Hans Ernst Homberger (1925-1986), Rauschenbach's grandson, takes over in the fifties. His tenure is difficult: the 1969 quartz crisis destroys the mechanical watch industry. IWC survives on dramatically reduced production.

In 1967 the original Aquatimer launches — IWC's first dive watch, 200m water resistance. In 1976, IWC commissions Gérald Genta to redesign the Ingenieur as the Ingenieur SL Ref. 1832 — one of history's first "luxury sport integrated" watches, alongside AP's Royal Oak (also Genta) and Patek's Nautilus.

Technical curiosity: in 1978 IWC and Porsche Design sign a manufacturing agreement. IWC produces for Porsche Design the first titanium wristwatch in history. The collaboration runs until 1998.

The Portugieser revival begins in the 1990s. The Ref. 5441 (1993) and the Minute Repeater Ref. 5251 (1995) reposition the line as the house's dress flagship.

Georges Kern is CEO from 2002 to 2012. He leads modernization: revives the Big Pilot Ref. 5002 with the 7-day Calibre 51011 (2002), launches the Top Gun line (2007), expands the global boutique network dramatically, and positions IWC as an aspirational premium brand ("Engineered for men" — a controversial tagline later retired).

In 2014, IWC signs Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 as an official partnership. In 2018 the new Manufacturing Center opens in Schaffhausen (USD 50M investment) — the ATP-designed building is where IWC's most complex in-house movements are assembled today.

IWC's 20th-century technical genius. In 1950 he designed the Calibre 85, IWC's first in-house automatic, with the bidirectional pawl winding system that still bears his name.

Pellaton winding captures each rotor motion in both directions with ~30% more efficiency than a conventional clutch system. It is IWC's distinctive technical signature for 75+ years — still in the current Calibre 32110.

His perpetual calendar has a unique feature: everything is set from the crown via a single pusher. Traditional perpetuals (Patek, AP, VC) require 5-7 separate correctors hidden on the case side. Klaus's design is modular and programmed to year 2499.

After leaving IWC in 2012, he ran Richemont's watch division. In 2017 he left Richemont to buy and run Breitling — where he remains CEO. His career is that of the architect of modern Swiss watch luxury.

During World War II, the German Luftwaffe contracts five watch manufactures to produce the Beobachtungsuhren (B-Uhr): navigation observation watches for bombers. The five are: A. Lange & Söhne, IWC, Stowa, Wempe and Laco.

The B-Uhren had extreme specifications: a 55 mm-diameter case (to read over a flight jacket), an oversize "onion crown" operable with gloves, central hacking seconds for synchronization, antimagnetic soft iron, and a Type-A dial (large 1-12 hours) or Type-B (large 5-60 minutes ring + small inner hour subdial).

During a USAAF (United States Army Air Forces) bombing mission over Germany, a group of B-24 Liberators get lost in poor weather and mistakenly bomb the neutral Swiss city of Schaffhausen. 40 civilians died, hundreds were injured. The IWC factory was partially damaged but production continued.

It is one of the most documented "friendly fire on Switzerland" incidents of WWII. The neutral Swiss government protested formally. The United States paid reparations in 1949. For IWC, the event is a dramatic chapter in the official story — the factory that survived an Allied bombing while producing watches for both sides.
