Sinn es una de las pocas marcas relojeras del mundo fundada por un piloto real. Sinn is one of the few watch brands in the world founded by an actual working pilot. Helmut Sinn (1916-2018) had been a Luftwaffe aviator during the Second World War, an instructor of night flying and instrument navigation, and later a civilian aerobatics pilot in postwar Germany. He was already 45 years old when he founded "Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren" in 1961, in Frankfurt.

His central thesis: aircraft cockpit chronographs and pilot wristwatch chronographs should be technically equivalent. He started in 1956 designing his very first wrist chronograph using the cockpit watches he knew as a direct reference. The brand was born with a commercial model that was radical for the time: direct sales, no retailer middlemen — pilots bought their watches straight from the manufacturer.

In September 1994, Helmut Sinn (then 78) sold the brand to Lothar Schmidt, a mechanical engineer who came from being technical director at IWC Schaffhausen and had developed the technical production of A. Lange & Söhne in its relaunch between 1990 and 1993. Schmidt had no military background — he was a pure technical engineer.

Under Schmidt, Sinn was transformed: from an artisan chronograph maker to a technical manufacture with documented proprietary technologies. The inventions — Tegiment, Ar-Dehumidifying, HYDRO — all come from the Schmidt era. The company went from ~12 employees to ~140.

Helmut Sinn is born on September 3, 1916 in Metz, Lorraine (then part of the German Empire, today France). He grows up as a passionate pilot. He obtains all flying licenses between 1936 and 1938, later joining the German Luftwaffe during World War II.

During the war, his role is not direct combat but night and instrument flying instructor on JU 52, Ju 88 and HE 111 aircraft. At the end of the war he is captured by the Americans. He later returns to aviation: ferries aircraft from France to Germany, is one of the founders of the Egelsbach airfield and becomes an aerobatics instructor.

In 1956, at age 40, he begins designing his first pilot wrist chronograph. The inspiration: the cockpit watches of the aircraft he knew intimately. 5 years of development lead to commercial launch.

In 1961, at age 45, Helmut Sinn formally founds "Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren" in Frankfurt am Main. The brand is born with a business model radical for the time: direct sales, no intermediate distributors. He sells directly to professional pilots, military personnel and technical enthusiasts.

During the 60s and 70s, the brand grows within the aviator niche. The Sinn 103 with Valjoux 72 calibre (one of the first models) becomes a standard chronograph for the German civil pilot.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Sinn obtains a key technical contract: service and refurbishment of the Heuer 1550 SG "Bundeswehr" chronographs used by the German Luftwaffe (West German Air Force) since 1967. Helmut Sinn takes advantage of the access to replace the original Heuer dials with Sinn-branded dials on the refurbished watches — a technically controversial practice but one that creates a today-collectible variant: the "Sinn-rebranded Heuer Bund".

The peak-notoriety moment of the Helmut Sinn era happens in October 1985. German astronaut Reinhard Furrer personally buys a Sinn 140 S (with Lemania 5100 calibre), takes it aboard the Spacelab D1 (STS-61-A) mission on the Space Shuttle Challenger, and wears it throughout the mission.

It is the first automatic chronograph in space. (There is debate: commander William Pogue had taken an unauthorized Seiko 6139 during Skylab 4 in 1973, but that flight was not officially documented). The Sinn 140 S is the first automatic chronograph with officially documented space use.

In the following years, Helmut Sinn — already in his 70s — keeps innovating with the 156 (Bundeswehr chronograph with Lemania 5100, a new generation replacing the refurbished Heuer 1550 SG). But gradually he decides to retire.

In 1994, at age 78, he sells the company.

The Sinn 140 S in space · open technical debate

There is still debate today over whether what Furrer used was exactly a 140 S with Lemania 5100 or a 141 S with Lemania 5012. The orbit photos are ambiguous. What is indisputable: it was a Sinn, automatic, reached space on STS-61-A in 1985. It was Challenger's last successful flight before its destruction on STS-51-L a few months later.

During the first 8 years of the Schmidt era, Sinn's hardened cases (the future Tegiment was still being developed) were manufactured by Damasko, another German manufacture specialized in advanced metallurgy. The Sinn 856, 757, part of the U-series and EZM of that era used Damasko cases without the public knowing. The relationship breaks in 2002. Today Damasko and Sinn are direct competitors in the same segment.

After the split with Damasko in 2002, Sinn internally develops the Tegiment technology (Kolsterising hardening process reaching 1,200 Vickers — the steel changes its crystalline structure near the surface, it is not a coating). This allows it to produce hardened cases without depending on external suppliers.

In 2005 the U-series line is born with the U1: divers in austenitic submarine steel (sourced from dismantled German submarines), 1,000m WR, DIN-DNV certification. The U1 quickly becomes the most recognizable model of modern Sinn.

The brand grows geographically: expanding distribution in the United States (via WatchBuys), United Kingdom (Jura Watches), Singapore (Gnomon), Australia (Define). Sinn goes from being a German niche brand to having global mid-range presence.

The use of the 140 S in orbit was the first automatic chronograph in space with official documentation. Previous chronographs in space (Omega Speedmaster on Apollo missions) were manual. The open technical question was whether an automatic movement with oscillating rotor could work in microgravity — where the rotor has no gravity to oscillate against as reference.

Furrer proved that they do work. The astronaut's movement (floating-walking inside the capsule, arm motion) provides enough kinetic energy for the rotor to keep the mainspring wound.

Note: commander William Pogue reportedly used a Seiko 6139 chronograph during Skylab 4 in 1973, but it was not NASA-authorized and the fact only came to light in 2007. The Sinn 140 S is the first officially documented automatic space chronograph.

In the mid-90s, during Schmidt's first years at the helm of Sinn, the company establishes a relationship with GSG-9 der Bundespolizei — the anti-terror tactical unit of the German Federal Police created in 1972 after the Munich attack. GSG-9 is comparable to the British SAS or the American SEAL Team Six in terms of capability and mission.

A sub-unit of GSG-9 specializes in maritime operations (boarding of suspicious vessels, hostage rescue on ships). It needed a watch rated for terrestrial and underwater use. Sinn specifically develops the EZM 2 / EZM 2B with submarine steel, Ar-Dehumidifying, sapphire double-AR coating, and later the UX version with HYDRO oil-fill.

The UX GSG 9 (EZM 2B) is still the official watch of the GSG-9 maritime squad today in 2026. It is one of the few active military/police contracts in German mid-range watchmaking (Damasko Eurofighter is the other comparable one).

During the Bundeswehr service contract of the 70s-80s, Helmut Sinn replaced the original Heuer dials with Sinn-branded dials during maintenance. The watch was still technically a Heuer 1550 SG, but came out Sinn-branded. This would be illegal today (trademark violation), but in the 70s it was common practice without strict regulation. The "Sinn 155 Bw" (Heuer-rebranded) are highly sought-after vintage collectibles today.

Reinhard Furrer compró personalmente su Sinn 140 S antes de la misión Spacelab D1. That authenticity (vs the watches NASA issued officially, like the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch) gives the Sinn space story a distinct character. Furrer died in 1995 in an aviation accident. The watch was donated to the family museum.

After selling Sinn in 1994, Helmut Sinn did not retire. In 1995 he bought the historic Swiss brand Guinand (founded 1865 in the Jura) and in 1996 founded Jubilar Uhren in Frankfurt. For 23 more years (until his death in 2018) he kept designing and selling pilot chronographs under the Guinand, Chronosport and Jubilar brands. He worked until age 101. Today Guinand still exists under his sons' management, selling chronographs very similar to the classic Sinns.

During the first 8 years of Lothar Schmidt at the helm, Sinn's hardened cases were NOT manufactured by Sinn. Damasko made them, another German manufacture specialized in metallurgy (Barbing, Bavaria). The Sinn 856, 757, part of the early U-series — all with Damasko cases without the public knowing. The relationship broke in 2002. Damasko is today one of Sinn's main German mid-range competitors. A historical detail both brands mention in their archives but rarely in marketing.

In collaboration with the Aachen University of Applied Sciences, Sinn helped develop TESTAF (Technical Standard for Pilot Watches) — the first independent technical standard for certifying pilot watches by measurable criteria (anti-magnetic, anti-vibration, anti-pressure, anti-temperature, legibility, etc.). The EZM 10 was the first TESTAF-certified watch (2013). Later other manufacturers adopted the standard.
